You are leaving your child at a play group, workshop, or nursery for the first time and questions are on your mind: "Will they cry? Can they adjust? Is it too early?" Do not worry; the adjustment process is a natural transition every child (and every parent!) goes through, and with the right approach it becomes much easier.
Separation Anxiety Is Normal
Separation anxiety in children aged 8 months to 3 years is developmentally normal. A child crying when parting from a parent is a sign of healthy attachment. What matters is how that anxiety is managed.
7 Steps That Ease the Adjustment Process
- Introduce the setting beforehand: Visit the venue together before the first day; let your child explore the space, instructors, and toys while you are there.
- Start with short sessions: Begin with brief attendance in the first days and gradually increase the duration.
- Keep goodbyes brief: Long, emotional farewells increase anxiety. Smile, say "I'll come after playtime," and leave. Never slip away secretly; that undermines trust.
- Keep your promise: Be there at the time you said you would. Trust is the foundation of adjustment.
- Allow a transition object: A favorite toy or blanket can be a source of comfort in the first days.
- Manage your own anxiety: Children sense a parent's unease instantly. If you are calm, they calm down too.
- Talk when you get home: Ask "What did you like most today?" and reinforce positive memories.
How Long Does Adjustment Take?
Most children settle into their new environment within 1–3 weeks. Some adjust from day one while others need more time; both are normal. Consistency matters greatly: taking breaks and starting again prolongs the process.
Choosing the Right Setting
